WHAT YOU’LL NEED

Keep it simple.

You don’t need specialist equipment — just the right setup and a little care.

🪽

Your Wing Patch

Check the reverse first and make sure it has an iron-on adhesive backing.

🔥

A Household Iron

Use dry heat on a setting suitable for the garment underneath.

🧺

Flat Heat-Safe Surface

An ironing board or another firm, heat-resistant surface works well.

Protective Cloth

Essential if any heat is applied from the front of the patch.

BEFORE YOU START

Protect the sequins.
Heat the backing.

Sequin wing patches are larger and more decorative than many standard patches, so it’s especially important to avoid pressing directly onto the sequin surface.

Always check the garment care label first. If the fabric should not be ironed, sewing is the safer attachment method.

WHY WINGS NEED EXTRA CARE

Large shape. Delicate surface.

Wing patches often cover a bigger area than a typical small patch, which means the adhesive needs good, even contact across the full shape.

At the same time, the decorative sequin surface can be damaged by excessive direct heat or pressure. That’s why careful positioning and reverse-side pressing matter so much.

STEP BY STEP

Let’s get those wings attached.

Seven simple steps for a secure finish without sacrificing the sparkle.

01

Prepare the garment

Make sure it is clean, dry and wrinkle-free before positioning the patch.

02

Position the wings

Take your time lining up the patch — larger wing shapes are very noticeable if they sit unevenly.

03

Secure the position

Use pins around the outer area if needed, provided they won’t interfere with where you need to press.

04

Turn the garment over

Work from the reverse wherever the construction of the garment allows.

05

Press section by section

Because wing patches can be large, work across the full shape using firm, stationary pressure for around 20–30 seconds per area.

06

Let it cool completely

Leave the patch flat and undisturbed while the adhesive cools and sets.

07

Check every edge

Once cool, gently inspect the perimeter. Repeat cautiously on any loose sections or reinforce with stitching.

FOR LARGE PATCHES

Don’t rely on one press in the middle.

A large wing design needs heat and pressure across the entire adhesive area. The centre may bond while the tips or outer edges remain loose if they haven’t been heated properly.

Work methodically across the full patch and only test the bond once everything has cooled.

🧵

Stitching is a great backup.

Large decorative patches can experience more movement and stress than small patches. A few discreet stitches around key edges can make the attachment much more durable.

AFTERCARE

Keep your wings sparkling.

👕

Turn inside out

Reduce rubbing against the sequin surface when washing.

🫧

Wash gently

Follow the garment care label and avoid rough cycles where possible.

🚫

No direct ironing

Never place a hot iron directly onto the sequin face after application.

🧵

Reinforce if needed

Large or frequently worn wing patches can benefit from additional stitching.
