01 · IRON-ON / HEAT SEAL
Easy Application Using Heat
Iron-on backing uses a heat-activated adhesive layer on the reverse of the patch. When correctly heated and pressed, the adhesive bonds to the garment fibres.
It is popular because customers can often apply patches themselves with a household iron, while larger organisations may use a heat press for faster and more consistent application.

02 · SEW-ON
Simple, Secure & Dependable
Sew-on patches are stitched directly to the garment or item, making them one of the most versatile and dependable attachment methods.
They are particularly useful where garments are washed frequently, where heat cannot safely be used or where maximum long-term security is the priority.

03 · HOOK & LOOP
Removable, Replaceable & Flexible
Hook & loop backing allows a patch to be removed and replaced whenever required. It is commonly referred to by the brand name Velcro, although hook & loop is the generic term.
The patch usually carries the hook side, which attaches to a loop panel sewn or otherwise fixed to the garment, bag or equipment.

04 · SELF-ADHESIVE
Peel, Position & Stick
Self-adhesive backing has a pressure-sensitive sticky layer protected by a release liner. Peel away the liner and press the patch onto the intended surface.
It is useful for temporary positioning and certain light-duty uses, but it should not be confused with a permanent heat-seal or sewn garment attachment.

What Makes a Patch Stay Attached?
The backing is only one part of the equation. The fabric, application method, washing conditions and intended use all affect how securely a patch remains attached.
For iron-on patches, correct heat, pressure and cooling are essential. For sew-on patches, stitch quality matters. For hook & loop systems, the attachment panel needs to be securely installed on the garment.
