PATCHES R US ACADEMY
How Great Patch Designs Are Made
Styles, Colour, Texture, Typography & Creative Direction
You don't need to begin by deciding whether you want embroidery, woven, chenille or PVC. Sometimes the best place to start is simply deciding how you want the finished patch to feel.
START WITH THE LOOK YOU WANT
You Don't Have to Know the Patch Type First
Customers don't always arrive asking for a woven patch or metallic embroidery. More often, they know they want something to feel premium, vintage, tactical, bold, understated or completely different.
That's a perfectly good place to begin.
Once we understand the visual direction, we can look at the artwork, size and intended use and decide which construction is most likely to produce the right physical result.

Don't design for the patch machine — design the idea first.— Patches R UsShow us what you want the finished piece to feel like. If that means simplifying the artwork, changing the construction or combining techniques afterwards, that's the part we can help with.
DESIGN STYLE LIBRARY
What Should Your Patch Feel Like?
These aren't rigid categories — they're visual directions that can help communicate the personality you're aiming for.
VINTAGE / HERITAGE
Traditional & Established
Muted colours, classic lettering, stitched borders and familiar badge shapes can create a timeless identity.
VARSITY / COLLEGIATE
Big, Soft & Tactile
Oversized letters, numbers, bold outlines and chenille texture create the unmistakable varsity look.
TACTICAL / MORALE
Bold & Functional
Dark palettes, dimensional PVC, hook-and-loop backing and strong silhouettes work particularly well for morale-style designs.
LUXURY / PREMIUM
Refined & Reflective
Metallic thread, rich dark grounds and fine detail can make a patch feel more like a premium branded object.
MINIMAL
Simple & Intentional
One-colour artwork, clean typography and simple silhouettes can feel incredibly strong when nothing unnecessary is competing for attention.
BOLD & GRAPHIC
High Contrast & Immediate
Strong icons, thick outlines and restricted colour palettes often produce extremely effective patches.
ILLUSTRATED
Artwork-Led
Characters, animals, artwork and detailed scenes can become the entire personality of the patch.
RETRO
Playful & Nostalgic
Rounded typography, warm colour palettes and nostalgic graphic language can give new artwork a deliberately older feel.
BRAND / CORPORATE
Professional & Recognisable
Logos, brand colours and recognisable visual identities can translate beautifully into patches without losing their professional character.
TEXT / TYPOGRAPHY
Words That Do the Talking
Lettering can become the entire design — from simple statements and slogans to expressive type, names and custom lettering.
CUTE / CHARACTER
Friendly & Expressive
Mascots, cartoon animals and playful artwork can become colourful, collectible patch designs.
SHAPES / SILHOUETTES
Designed Beyond the Circle
Custom outlines, unusual shapes and clean-cut edges allow the patch itself to become part of the design.

Colour Direction Can Change the Entire Personality
Even the exact same patch can feel completely different simply by changing its colour direction. A bold red can feel sporty, black more understated, pink more playful, while classic varsity colours create an entirely different character.
Colour can be explored through individual thread and chenille choices, or through a wider palette direction such as monochrome, tone-on-tone, metallic, pastel or high contrast.
FROM THE PATCHES R US STUDIO
You Don't Have to Use Every Brand Colour
Customers sometimes feel that every branded patch must exactly reproduce the full corporate colour palette.
It doesn't. A monochrome, subdued or tonal version can make an excellent secondary patch while still remaining recognisably part of the same identity.
LETTERING IS PART OF THE ARTWORK
Typography Can Define the Style
Block
Bold, legible and strong at smaller sizes.
Varsity
Collegiate styling for sport, fashion and chenille.
Serif
Traditional, premium or heritage-led identities.
Script
Elegant, decorative lettering where scale allows.
Condensed
Useful when wording needs to fit into narrow spaces.
Decorative
Strong personality for music, clubs and statement designs.
THE EDGE CHANGES THE CHARACTER TOO
Borders Aren't Just Technical
The border can affect how traditional, clean, graphic or contemporary the finished patch feels.
Classic, tactile and unmistakably patch-like.
Cut to shape with a stitched outer edge for a clean, custom finish.
Precision cut with a smooth edge, ideal for intricate shapes and fine details.

REFERENCES ARE STARTING POINTS
You Can Show Us a Patch You Love Without Copying It
Inspiration images are useful because they communicate texture, colour, scale and mood.
You might like the chenille texture from one design, the tonal colour palette from another and the shape of a third. We can use those references to understand the direction without reproducing someone else's artwork.
