How Great Patch Designs Are Made

Styles, Colour, Texture, Typography & Creative Direction

You don't need to begin by deciding whether you want embroidery, woven, chenille or PVC. Sometimes the best place to start is simply deciding how you want the finished patch to feel.

✓ Explore visual styles ✓ Compare materials & finishes ✓ Find a direction for your artwork

You Don't Have to Know the Patch Type First

Customers don't always arrive asking for a woven patch or metallic embroidery. More often, they know they want something to feel premium, vintage, tactical, bold, understated or completely different.

That's a perfectly good place to begin.

Once we understand the visual direction, we can look at the artwork, size and intended use and decide which construction is most likely to produce the right physical result.

FROM THE PATCHES R US STUDIO

Don't design for the patch machine — design the idea first.

Show us what you want the finished piece to feel like. If that means simplifying the artwork, changing the construction or combining techniques afterwards, that's the part we can help with.

What Should Your Patch Feel Like?

These aren't rigid categories — they're visual directions that can help communicate the personality you're aiming for.

VINTAGE / HERITAGE

Traditional & Established

Muted colours, classic lettering, stitched borders and familiar badge shapes can create a timeless identity.

Muted tones Serif type Merrowed edge

VARSITY / COLLEGIATE

Big, Soft & Tactile

Oversized letters, numbers, bold outlines and chenille texture create the unmistakable varsity look.

Chenille Oversized type Contrast outlines

TACTICAL / MORALE

Bold & Functional

Dark palettes, dimensional PVC, hook-and-loop backing and strong silhouettes work particularly well for morale-style designs.

PVC Hook & loop Subdued colour

LUXURY / PREMIUM

Refined & Reflective

Metallic thread, rich dark grounds and fine detail can make a patch feel more like a premium branded object.

Metallic thread Black grounds Fine detail

MINIMAL

Simple & Intentional

One-colour artwork, clean typography and simple silhouettes can feel incredibly strong when nothing unnecessary is competing for attention.

Monochrome Clean type Simple shape

BOLD & GRAPHIC

High Contrast & Immediate

Strong icons, thick outlines and restricted colour palettes often produce extremely effective patches.

High contrast Graphic icons Thick outlines

ILLUSTRATED

Artwork-Led

Characters, animals, artwork and detailed scenes can become the entire personality of the patch.

Print Woven Printed PVC

RETRO

Playful & Nostalgic

Rounded typography, warm colour palettes and nostalgic graphic language can give new artwork a deliberately older feel.

70s / 80s Warm colour Rounded type

BRAND / CORPORATE

Professional & Recognisable

Logos, brand colours and recognisable visual identities can translate beautifully into patches without losing their professional character.

Brand colours Logo-led Professional

TEXT / TYPOGRAPHY

Words That Do the Talking

Lettering can become the entire design — from simple statements and slogans to expressive type, names and custom lettering.

Lettering Slogans Custom type

CUTE / CHARACTER

Friendly & Expressive

Mascots, cartoon animals and playful artwork can become colourful, collectible patch designs.

SHAPES / SILHOUETTES

Designed Beyond the Circle

Custom outlines, unusual shapes and clean-cut edges allow the patch itself to become part of the design.

Construction Can Completely Change the Look

These are all genuine customer projects. Each demonstrates how different materials create completely different visual personalities, from traditional embroidery and chenille through to woven, PVC and printed patches.

Custom embroidered patch

EMBROIDERED

Classic

Traditional stitched texture with timeless character.
Custom woven patch

WOVEN

Fine Detail

Crisp lettering and exceptional detail reproduction.
Metallic embroidered patch

METALLIC

Premium Finish

Reflective metallic thread creates an elevated appearance.
Chenille varsity patch

CHENILLE

Bold Texture

Soft dimensional pile for statement jackets and apparel.
3D PVC patch

PVC

Modern

Durable moulded construction with striking depth.
Printed custom patch

PRINTED

Illustrative

Ideal for gradients, artwork and photographic colour.
Different materials create different personalities. Embroidery feels tactile and traditional. Woven captures intricate detail. Chenille adds depth and softness. Metallic thread brings a premium finish, while PVC and printed patches open up entirely different creative possibilities. Choosing the right construction is often just as important as designing the artwork itself.

Colour Direction Can Change the Entire Personality

Even the exact same patch can feel completely different simply by changing its colour direction. A bold red can feel sporty, black more understated, pink more playful, while classic varsity colours create an entirely different character.

Colour can be explored through individual thread and chenille choices, or through a wider palette direction such as monochrome, tone-on-tone, metallic, pastel or high contrast.

You Don't Have to Use Every Brand Colour

Customers sometimes feel that every branded patch must exactly reproduce the full corporate colour palette.

It doesn't. A monochrome, subdued or tonal version can make an excellent secondary patch while still remaining recognisably part of the same identity.

Typography Can Define the Style

PATCH

Block

Bold, legible and strong at smaller sizes.

PATCH

Varsity

Collegiate styling for sport, fashion and chenille.

Patch

Serif

Traditional, premium or heritage-led identities.

Patch

Script

Elegant, decorative lettering where scale allows.

PATCH

Condensed

Useful when wording needs to fit into narrow spaces.

PATCH

Decorative

Strong personality for music, clubs and statement designs.

Beautiful on screen doesn't always mean legible in thread. Very fine fonts, tiny counters and delicate scripts may need simplifying, resizing or switching to woven or printed construction.

Borders Aren't Just Technical

The border can affect how traditional, clean, graphic or contemporary the finished patch feels.

01 Merrowed

Classic, tactile and unmistakably patch-like.

02 Embroidered Heat Cut

Cut to shape with a stitched outer edge for a clean, custom finish.

03 Laser Cut

Precision cut with a smooth edge, ideal for intricate shapes and fine details.

You Can Show Us a Patch You Love Without Copying It

Inspiration images are useful because they communicate texture, colour, scale and mood.

You might like the chenille texture from one design, the tonal colour palette from another and the shape of a third. We can use those references to understand the direction without reproducing someone else's artwork.

01 What should it feel like?
02 Where will it be used?
03 How large will it be?
04 Which details matter most?
Then we can recommend construction.

Custom Patch Design FAQs

Do I need to know which type of patch I want before ordering?
No. You can begin with the artwork and desired visual style and we can recommend embroidery, woven, printed, chenille, PVC or another suitable construction.
Can the same logo be made in different patch styles?
Yes. The same identity can often be interpreted using different materials, colours and finishes to create several distinct versions.
Can I make a monochrome version of my colourful logo?
Yes. Monochrome, tonal and subdued versions can be very effective secondary interpretations of existing branding.
Can I send Pinterest or reference images?
Yes. Reference images are useful for communicating style, texture, colour and overall direction, provided the finished design remains original to your project.
Which patch type looks most premium?
There isn't one universal answer. Metallic embroidery, detailed woven construction, tonal embroidery and other finishes can all feel premium depending on the artwork.
Can you combine more than one patch technique?
Yes. Mixed construction can work very well where different parts of the design need different textures or levels of detail.
Can AI artwork be used as design inspiration?
Yes. AI-generated artwork can be an excellent visual starting point, although it may need interpreting before physical production.
What if the font in my design is too small?
We may recommend increasing the patch size, adjusting the lettering or using woven or printed construction where appropriate.
