PVC Is Brilliant — When It's the Right Material

We make PVC patches and genuinely love what the material can do. It can be rugged, tactile, waterproof, dimensional and incredibly effective for outdoor, tactical and equipment-based applications.

But there are also projects where woven, embroidered or printed textile patches are simply a better fit.

The useful question isn't:

“Can this be made in PVC?”

It's:

“Which material will make this artwork and application work best?”

There are applications where its durability, structure and weather resistance make PVC a particularly strong choice.

PVC Can Be the Wrong Personality for the Garment

Durability isn't the only thing that matters.

A material can be technically suitable and still feel wrong for the finished product.

A rigid PVC patch can feel heavier and less integrated on a lightweight T-shirt.

Woven or embroidery may sit more naturally where the garment needs to remain soft and flexible.

03 Very Lightweight Fabrics

A heavier patch can affect how fine fabric hangs or moves.

If the aim is quiet, soft, refined branding, woven or tonal embroidery may feel more appropriate.

What's True, What's Contextual & What's Missing?

Some of the standard advice about PVC patches is technically true, but often leaves out the manufacturing context.

“PVC patches are difficult to sew.”

TRUE IN SOME APPLICATIONS

Sewing directly through thick PVC is not the same experience as sewing through a soft woven or embroidered patch.

But that doesn't mean every PVC patch needs to be sewn through at all.

What matters: Many PVC patches are supplied with hook-and-loop backing. In that case, the receiving loop panel is attached to the garment or equipment and the PVC patch simply attaches to it.

“PVC patches take longer to produce.”

TRUE — FOR THE INITIAL ORDER

A custom mould has to be created before the first production run, so the initial setup stage adds time compared with some textile constructions.

The important bit: the mould stage is associated with creating that design. Once tooling exists, repeat production doesn't begin from the same starting point.
CLAIM

“PVC can't reproduce gradients or realistic detail.”

ONLY TRUE FOR PURE MOULDED PVC

Traditional moulded PVC works through shaped colour areas and physical raised or recessed structure. That means photographic effects and smooth colour gradients are not created by the mould alone.

But that isn't the end of the story.

Printed PVC changes the possibilities. Printed colour and illustration can be combined with moulded PVC, allowing detailed artwork, tonal colour and visual effects to sit alongside raised 2D or 3D structure.

“PVC reduces airflow.”

TRUE — BUT CONTEXT MATTERS

A solid PVC patch naturally creates a less breathable area than a lightweight textile surface.

That matters on some garments more than others. On a cotton shirt or lightweight casual garment, it may affect comfort. On a tactical jacket, waterproof shell, equipment pouch or backpack, breathability at the patch location may be largely irrelevant.

“PVC is always more expensive.”

NOT THAT SIMPLE

PVC can involve an initial mould or setup cost that isn't present in the same way with every textile patch type.

But price depends on the whole project. Quantity, size, mould complexity, colours, printing, backing and repeat production all affect the real comparison.

Printed detail preserved the dramatic colour and flame effects while the PVC supplied the tactile dimensional structure.

The point wasn't to reproduce every digital pixel. The artwork was interpreted for manufacture so the finished patch kept the intended drama while gaining the physical depth of PVC.

Printed PVC Changes What the Material Can Do

If you only compare traditional flat-colour moulded PVC with woven or printed textile patches, you miss an important option.

Print can be added to PVC to introduce detail that isn't created by moulded colour areas alone.

Printed PVC doesn't mean “anything goes”. Artwork may still need adapting so the printed areas and moulded structure work together properly.

Where Woven Can Absolutely Beat PVC

PVC isn't a hierarchy upgrade from woven. They're different tools for different jobs.

Woven construction can be excellent for compact text and detailed linework.

A thin textile patch generally sits more naturally on softer garments.

The goal isn't to push one construction. It's to choose the material that gives you the strongest finished patch.

Embroidery has genuine thread texture.

That traditional stitched character is part of the appeal, particularly for uniforms, workwear, heritage-style branding, clubs and fashion.

A large solid PVC patch on a lightweight cotton shirt is very different from the same patch sitting on a waterproof jacket or tactical bag.

Are PVC patches waterproof?
PVC itself is a water-resistant moulded material, making it particularly suitable for many outdoor and equipment applications.
Can PVC patches have gradients?
Traditional moulded PVC does not create smooth printed gradients in the same way as printed artwork. However, printed detail can be combined with PVC construction to create more complex colour and illustrative effects.
Can PVC patches be sewn onto clothing?
They can be attached in different ways depending on the design and application. Many PVC patches are supplied with hook-and-loop backing rather than requiring the patch itself to be sewn directly through.
Are PVC patches suitable for T-shirts?
They can be used on clothing, but a rigid or heavier PVC patch may not feel as natural on lightweight cotton garments as woven or embroidered alternatives.
Why do PVC patches need a mould?
The mould defines the physical shape and raised or recessed construction of the PVC design. This adds an initial tooling stage before first production.
Do I need to pay for a new mould every time I reorder?
Repeat production can use the established tooling for the same design, subject to the details of the original production setup.
Is woven better than PVC?
Neither is universally better. Woven is excellent for fine textile detail and lightweight flexibility, while PVC offers durability, dimensional structure and a very different physical finish.
Can PVC patches have hook-and-loop backing?
Yes. Hook-and-loop backing is particularly common for tactical, morale, equipment and removable patch applications.
