How to Wash, Dry, Iron & Look After Your Patches
A good patch can last beautifully, but the way it is attached, washed and cared for matters. This guide covers everyday washing, heat-seal patches, sewn-on patches, chenille, PVC, repairs and what to check if an edge starts lifting.

Can You Wash Clothes With Patches On?
In many cases, yes.
Most properly attached embroidered, woven, chenille and PVC patches can cope well with normal wear and appropriate washing.
The important part is to consider both the patch construction and the care instructions of the garment it has been attached to.
If your garment, patch or adhesive has specific care instructions, always follow those first.

NEWLY APPLIED PATCH?
Don't Rush the First Wash
If you've just applied a heat-seal or iron-on patch, give the adhesive time to cool and settle fully before putting the garment through a wash.
Application quality is also important. A patch that has received the correct heat and firm, even pressure is much more likely to perform well than one that was only lightly warmed onto the surface.
EVERYDAY CARE
How to Wash Garments With Patches
There isn't one universal washing rule for every patch and garment, but gentler washing generally reduces unnecessary wear on both the patch and the attachment.
Check the garment label. The clothing itself may have more restrictive instructions than the patch.
Turn the garment inside out where practical. This can reduce rubbing against other items in the drum.
Choose a sensible wash cycle. Gentle or normal domestic washing is generally kinder than aggressive or high-temperature laundering.
Check the patch after washing. If an edge has started lifting, deal with it early rather than repeatedly washing it loose.

Care Depends on the Construction
The material, backing and method of attachment all influence how the finished item should be treated.
Embroidered Patches
Embroidery is generally robust, particularly when securely sewn or correctly heat-applied. Avoid unnecessary abrasion and excessive heat where possible.
Woven Patches
Woven patches are relatively flat and detailed. The care method depends heavily on the backing and the garment they are attached to.
Chenille Patches
Chenille has a deeper, softer surface. Gentler washing and avoiding unnecessary friction helps keep the textured yarn looking its best.
PVC Patches
PVC itself is durable, but always consider how it has been attached and the care requirements of the garment underneath.
Heat-Seal / Iron-On
Long-term performance depends heavily on correct application, suitable fabric and appropriate washing conditions.
Sewn-On Patches
Sewing gives the patch mechanical attachment to the garment and is often our preferred option for frequently washed or hard-working items.
Hook & Loop
Where possible, removable patches can be taken off before washing, which reduces wear on both the patch face and the hook-and-loop surface.
Printed / Hybrid Patches
Treat detailed printed surfaces with a little extra care and avoid unnecessary harsh abrasion or direct high heat.
USING AN IRON AFTERWARDS
Can You Iron Over a Patch?
Sometimes — but direct heat isn't appropriate for every patch material.
Embroidered & Woven
If ironing is appropriate for the garment, protect the patch with a pressing cloth and avoid unnecessary direct contact with the iron.
Chenille
Avoid flattening the textured surface with direct pressure. If heat is needed, work carefully around the patch rather than crushing the pile.
PVC & Special Finishes
Avoid placing a hot iron directly onto PVC or heat-sensitive decorative materials.
TROUBLESHOOTING
Why Did My Iron-On Patch Start Lifting?
A lifting edge doesn't automatically mean there's something wrong with the patch itself. Adhesion depends on a combination of heat, pressure, fabric and how the finished garment is used.
Not enough heat The adhesive may not have reached the temperature needed to bond fully.
Too little pressure Heat alone isn't always enough. The patch needs firm, even contact with the fabric.
Steam during application Moisture can interfere with the bonding process.
Fabric coatings Water-resistant, treated or difficult synthetic surfaces may not accept adhesive as readily.
Stretch or movement A rigid patch attached to highly flexible fabric experiences repeated tension around the edges.
Frequent laundering Repeated washing, drying and everyday wear can gradually stress an adhesive-only attachment.

SAVE IT EARLY
What to Do When an Edge Starts Lifting
Don't Keep Pulling It
Repeatedly lifting or testing the loose edge will usually make the affected area larger.
Check the Fabric
Consider whether the garment surface is suitable for heat and whether a coating or texture may be affecting adhesion.
Reapply Where Appropriate
For a suitable heat-seal patch and garment, carefully reapplying heat and pressure may help restore the bond.
Add Stitching
If the garment will experience regular washing or heavy wear, sewing around the edge can provide additional long-term security.
FREQUENTLY WASHED GARMENTS
Workwear Needs a Different Mindset
A jacket worn occasionally and a uniform washed several times every week are very different applications.
For workwear, uniforms and other garments that will experience repeated laundering, sewing is often the safest long-term attachment method — either by itself or in addition to an appropriate heat-seal application.
LARGER PROJECT?
Plan Application & Care Before the Rollout
For larger uniform, retail, event or branded merchandise programmes, application shouldn't be an afterthought.
We can discuss patch construction, backing, heat-press application, garment compatibility, adhesion and practical testing before the wider project begins.

Common Patch Care Mistakes
Washing Immediately
Give newly heat-applied patches time to cool and establish their bond before laundering.
Using Steam to Apply
For heat-seal application, use dry heat rather than introducing steam into the bonding process.
Assuming Every Fabric Is the Same
Coatings, stretch, thickness and fibre content can all affect adhesion and application.
Pulling a Loose Edge
A tiny lifting corner is much easier to repair than a patch that has been deliberately peeled away.
Too Much Direct Heat
Decorative materials, chenille and PVC should not be treated as if they were plain cotton fabric.
Using Adhesive Alone for Everything
Frequently washed workwear and demanding applications may benefit from sewing rather than relying solely on heat-seal.
